The Voice of Early Career Professionals and Students

Get Ready for the Future Ready Toolkit

A team of SLA members and staff have collaborated to produce an extremely valuable deliverable for the SLA community. This group has taken the rich data gleaned from the SLA Alignment Project and translated it into a set of tried-and-true best practices that they have personally used to successfully meet professional challenges. The result is a new benefit of your SLA membership: The Future Ready Toolkit. These tools are focused and specific, and updated to include Web 2.0 technologies. Add to your own skillset by utilizing tools such as:
- Marketing and Branding Your Services
- 5 Ways to Use Social Media or Other Emerging Technologies in Your Job Search
- Build a Network to Engage and Partner with Stakeholders
- Planning, Writing, and Presenting a Budget

Info Lit Standards for Teacher Education

The Information Literacy Standards for Teacher Education have been officially approved by the ACRL Executive Committee. The Standards will be posted on the ACRL website soon, and will also appear in an upcoming issue of C&RL News, ACRL's publication of record.

Cultural competence for academic librarians

ACRL Racial and Ethnic Diversity Committee(REDC) has developed cultural competencies standards for academic libraries. We want your feedback to improve these association standards now in the draft stage listed on the ACRL Standards Page, http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/acrl/standards/index.cfm. SCC member Lesley Farmer edited the standards.

The study benchmarked leading corporate libraries to develop key metrics and trends for the delivery of library services. Hear about the insights and outcomes from managers and directors in 40+ corporate libraries. How does your library compare:

--How is your budget divided? Do you spend more on labor or content? What is the split between print and electronic materials?

--What is the average cost per user?

--How many users do a typical corporate librarian support?

--What are the major trends in corporate libraries?

Our Speaker Martha Haswell has worked since 2002 as a senior research analyst for Best Practices, LLC, a world leader in benchmarking research. She has led benchmarking projects for library, human resources, marketing, sales and other functions at leading companies including Boeing, Pfizer, American Express, Philips Medical and AstraZeneca.

Martha previously worked as a corporate librarian and has 15 years experience in corporate libraries in the publishing and telecommunications industries. She holds an MS in Information Science and a BA in Journalism and Mass Communications, both from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Cost: no charge to SLA members, students/retired/unemployed; however, we are accepting donations to the Sternheim Scholarship Fund.
