Another Preservation Workshop

The Los Angeles Preservation Network (LAPNet) invites you to attend a workshop:

Mold : Prevention and Remediation

Presented by Michele Brown, Book Conservator at Cornell University. Location: The Huntington Library, 1151 Oxford Road, San Marino, CA 91108. DATE: MAY 25, 2011, 9-4pm.

REGISTRATION FEE: $40 for the Morning Session Only (includes refreshments and admission to The Huntington) $75 Full-Day (includes refreshments, lunch and Hands-On Afternoon Session)

What is mold? How do you identify it? What types of mold can we expect to find on heritage materials? What do we do if we find it? How can we prevent it from occurring in the future? This workshop will address these questions and other concerns that participants may have regarding mold in their collections. We will begin in the morning with a discussion of the life cycle of mold, types of mold likely to occur in libraries and museums, and what conditions contribute to mold growth in libraries and museums. In the afternoon we will explore ways to treat mold if it does occur in your collection. We will pay particular attention to the methods and equipment necessary for safeguarding the health and safety of library staff that may have to deal with mold outbreaks.

LIMITED ENROLLMENT! THE HANDS-ON AFTERNOON SESSION IS LIMITED TO 20 PARTICIPANTS.THERE IS NO LIMIT ON THE NUMBER OF REGISTRANTS FOR THE MORNING LECTURE.

FREE "PROTECTING CULTURAL COLLECTIONS" WORKSHOPS

The Californians Connecting to Collections Project is a two-year, statewide preservation project that will provide information, education, and training to California heritage institutions. One component of this project is a two-part workshop, titled Protecting Cultural Collections: Disaster Prevention, Preparedness, Response and Recovery. Participants will complete a disaster response and collection salvage plan by the end of Part 2, including pre- and post-disaster action priorities for your collections, and an understanding of the practical decision-making skills needed during an emergency. These workshops are FREE. Funding is provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) through a Connecting to Collections statewide grant.
